CSDDD Fails to Pass

Despite numerous attempts, EU member states failed to reach an agreement to approve the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) at an EU Council meeting on 28 February 2024. The CSDDD, proposed by the EU Commission in 2022, aims to make large companies responsible for assessing and mitigating their social and environmental impacts. Despite reaching a political agreement in December, the Council has since rejected the text.
The vote was previously postponed due to Germany's abstention and the withdrawal of support from Italy, Austria, Sweden, and Finland. Approval required a qualified majority, which was unattainable without the support of Italy or Germany. France's demand to narrow the directive's scope further complicated negotiations. The failure to agree means the Council and Parliament must renegotiate the text, potentially delaying the Directive until after the next EU Parliament elections. More information is available here.
